THE EXORCIST trilogy coming to resurrect the franchise (NEWS)

Wrapping up production on the final film in his Halloween requel trilogy with the upcoming Halloween Ends (2022), writer/director David Gordon Green is beginning work on another requel trilogy, The Exorcist. The first film in a planned trilogy, The Exorcist will pick up 50 years after the events of the original 1973 film and will see the return of at least one familiar face in Ellen Burstyn, who will be reprising her role as Chris MacNeil, mother of the demon-possessed Regan (Linda Blair) in the original film. While it is not yet known if Blair will be returning, the plot for the revival trilogy will revolve around a new possessed child.

Universal Pictures and NBC Peacock purchased the rights to The Exorcist in partnership with Blumhouse and Morgan Creek for a reported $400 million dollars. The franchise will be helmed by David Gordon Green, who both wrote and directed the Halloween requel trilogy, which is slated to come to its conclusion with this fall’s , Halloween Ends, expected in theaters October 14, 2022.

Reps at Universal emphasized that the new trilogy will serve as a continuation of the original Exorcist film, rather than a remake. “There’s no better time to be joining forces with the team at Peacock, reuniting with the great team at Universal and finally getting to work with our friends at Blumhouse on this classic franchise,” Morgan Creek President’s David Robinson said in a statement. “David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, Scott Teems and Peter Sattler have put together a compelling continuation of this iconic tale and I can’t wait to bring this to fans around the world.”
